Disaster with the band again.
Unfortunately the band that I was supposed to shoot had to cancel. Meaning I was left with no band. However,
I have been shown this video:
This video is exactly the type that if I were to do a narrative then it would be exactly like this. Therefore instead of having a performance video I am going to have a narrative video like this.

Inspiration for Digipak and Poster.
This video is an example of what has been done previously which is similar to my poster and digipak. The use of the single line drawings make the video stand out to an extent. It also highlights the video as it is wire framed, so that it looks quirky, retro and different.
These three albums focus on a main image in the middle which are quite simple but still really effective due to the plain background and mainly plain colouring of the cover.Overall, all of these contributed to my ideas as I really liked the idea of just something really plain, yet it is easy to see that it has been made for a metal band. I am glad that I chose the plain style as it is easily identifiable that it is a metal album and a lot of the target audience will like it. As I am technically a part of the target audience I would say that if I saw a band with that album cover on I would definitely know that it came from this genre and that I wouldn't have a problem with it, and the artwork would probably encourage me slightly to buy the album.

Draft Music Video
Due to this being my draft I have not blurred out the offensive language as I am going to film everything again in a better location. Tonight I will start looking for another, more dedicated band and also a studio to perform in as I think that it will make my music video much better for the suggested audience.

Due to the change in my video I decided to email the director again for some more tips. This was his response:

Update on Filming.
Unfortunately my filming didn't go ahead on both occassions due to more circumstances beyond my control. Sunday the 10th of November will be the day that I film with the origional vocalist. I am 100% certain that this will go ahead as planned as it is all 100% set in stone.

Filming take 4
Tonight (05/11/2013) I shall be filming. If for some unexpected reason I do not film tonight then I have a back up of tomorrow night with a different 'singer'.
Hopefully this will mean that I will definitely get to film either tonight or tomorrow.

Plan of Action.
I am either going to film tonight 01/11/2013, 3/11/2013 or 05/11/2013. Those are my three dates that I absolutely have to film on. Preferably tonight, but the other two are my back ups just incase.
I shall then aim to have edited it all by Friday the 8th November, if not before.
I am hopeful that this will work out 4th time of filming.

Draft Deadline and Filming Take 3.
Due to circumstances beyond my control filming did not go ahead on 31/10/2013. I am planning on filming within the next few days but this therefore means that I shall not complete the deadline for 01/11/2013.

Filming.
Filming Take 1
I filmed last week and a few problems occured.
My Parents used to be on the Church Committee meaning that it was easy for me to think of a different location - The Church.
We went and filmed in the church and the shots went surprisingly well, I did the whole song twice before the camera died. This therefore meant that I only had shots of the drummer from different angles.
Over the next few weeks
The band then became unavailable to film as they did not respond to my messages so I had to find a replacement. Unfortunately I could only find one person so I planned to have just a single vocalist performance video in a wooded area with two car headlights and some flood lights lighting up the area.
Filming Take 2
Everything was set up to film, lighting, cameras, music etc. but then I realised that I had misplaced my memory card. This therefore means that I have got to film Thursday the 31st October and edit my film on the 1st of November ready for the deadline.
Things to make sure that it works the third time
I shall make sure this evening that I have got everything is ready and that the person that is going to be in it is 100% going to do it.
I filmed last week and a few problems occured.
- One of the band members didn't show
- The man who was supposed to open the venue didn't show (Meaning no location / lighting etc)
- The memory cards filled ridiculously fast and couldn't film much more
- The camera went flat and broke for no reason even though it was fully charged

Change of Band Members and His Outfit.
My previous band members have decided that they are no longer available for filming. This therefore meant that I had to ask someone else to be in it. My video will now be a one person performance video, still at The Vault, with possibly some narrative shots of the vocalist walking around singing. Depending on lighting. Unfortunately due to deadlines and the unfortunate cancellation of the band, I have not had any time to plan what I shall be filming. However, some thought has gone into it and I shall film the song around 10-12 times at different camera angles and then again outside whilst he is singing.

Continuity
When filming I shall put marks on the floor, with masking tape, for where the band should be stood. This will help improve the continuity of the video as it will enable them to look like they are staying in the same place. Which they will be due to the markers.
I shall also put marks on the floor for where I will stand for the shots and write on them what shots I will have to stand there for.

Don Broco, Hold On Textual Analysis.
The first 33 seconds of the video show a complete contrast to what would be expected of this genre of music. This is due to the lavish stately home setting which ridicules their other music videos to become a binary opposite to them. The editing conforms to the male gaze of a suggestive nature as it cuts to the vocalists face on a C/U to link in with the lyrics and what they are supposed to connote, which is that they are being messed around or ‘Played’. The editing is also smooth which correctly goes along the suave characteristic of the vocalist and the other band members on occasions. The peaceful overall atmosphere; which is completely abnormal in this type of genre as one would expect there to be a lot of performance and shaky/fast editing to run parallel with the fast pace of the song and energetic characters within the band. Also the irony with the attractive girls flaunting their bodies around the band contradict the lyrics suggesting that something is going on; however it could also enable the ‘storyline’ of the plot to move forward as the whole theme of lying can be shown through the girls walking around seductively close to the vocalist and what might be their intention. The irony is also shown within the first few shots when the vocalist is cradling a glass of whisky; this is mainly ironic to the fans of the band who know them quite well as it is the opposite of how they would act and they would know that they are trying to create a comical element within the video. However, at 31 seconds a general characteristic of the genre is executed, where there is a comical gesture (which also collides with the overall comical theme) as the Drummer creates a mimic of someone going to the toilet to aid the comedic features. The seductiveness of the context within the lyrics is shown through the other band members as well as the vocalist as the fast pace editing shows them quickly trying to ‘lure’ the women into the song, which is an example of the male gaze. At 16 seconds the vocalist synchronises the lyrics ‘Stick your tongue between my teeth’ with a seductive nod as to connote that he is inviting a girl to seduce him as he is her.
33- 47 seconds
From 33 seconds to 47 seconds the video becomes less of a narrative and more of a performance video as most of the shots are of a member playing their instrument / singing into a microphone. This section of the video is especially a self-referential parody to their first single ‘Thug Workout’ as the video to the single was very low budget and self-directed/filmed. This is shown by the over exaggerated extravagant scenery such as the wallpaper and the large fireplace. The naff/camp theme is even reflected in the editing as it is similar to that of ‘Dallas’ or ‘Charlie’s Angles’ which are known for their naff show titles. The vertical wipes link to the retro styling which overall is connected to the overall style of the video and especially the location. The four way split enables the whole band to be seen at once, yet not in the traditional ways meaning that the director was trying to challenge conventions within the video. The dancing around the girls enhances the ‘campness’ of the video as their dancing is supposed to be seductive but yet again it adds a comical element to the overall production.

Found Footage
This exercise helped me to consider the different times in a song to cut to different shots / video, this enabled me to create a better video as I was more aware of timing and when it was suitable for the change. It also helped me to consider the links between the lyrics and what was on screen.
